I don’t pretend to be some mathematics wiz who can predict how often an even-numbered player scores first in a game, but let’s look at some basics before betting on this one. 2010 Super Bowl Odds list Colts -4.5 favorites. Both Peyton Manning and Drew Brees have even-numbered jerseys, but throwing a TD pass doesn’t count. Manning or Brees would have to either catch a pass (no chance) or run one in to qualify as the first/last score or first/last TD. Manning had no TD rushes this year, while Brees had just two and those came in the same game. Don’t expect any QB sneaks on the 1-yard-line in this game. So the most likely players to score a TD on New Orleans, in no particular order (with jersey number), are: Reggie Bush (25), Pierre Thomas (23), Marques Colston (12), Devery Henderson (19), Robert Meachem (17) and Jeremy Shockey (88). Bush is also the Saints’ punt returner, while Courtney Roby (15) is the main kick returner. NFL Super Bowl Odds Saints +4.5 underdog. The most likely Colts to score a TD, in no particular order (with jersey number), are: Joseph Addai (29), Dallas Clark (44), Reggie Wayne (87), Pierre Garcon (85) and Austin Collie (17). Indy’s main punt returner is T.J. Rushing (20) and its kick returners are Rushing and Chad Simpson (35). So as you can see from the two teams, the majority of the players likely to score a touchdown have odd numbers. And when looking at the first player to actually score (i.e. this is when a field goal comes into play), the Saints’ kicker is Garrett Hartley (5), while the Colts’ is Matt Stover (3). Thus the numbers hugely favor taking an odd-numbered player to score first. The oddsmakers certainly did their homework here. I wouldn’t recommend a bet on an even-numbered player to score first, but I think wagering on an even number to score the first TD is good value because I believe that one of the two tight ends, Shockey or Clark, gets the first score. And you also get Marques Colston in that group, the Saints’ best receiver. And of course I haven’t even looked at all of the defensive players available with even-numbered jerseys. As for the last score of the game (not TD, just score), that obviously heavy favors the two kickers.
